The Old Town (Altstadt): is perfect for wandering around when you have plenty of time to spare. Make a start at the Marktplaz, a bustling market square surrounded by historic buildings and move on to visit the Holy Ghost Church, the Town Hall and the remarkable Bridge Gate with a famous Bridge Monkey.
Universitatsplatz: is home to the oldest university in the country, the University of Heidelberg. Once you are here, make your way to visit the famous Studentekarzer (student prison) where you can find an array of wall paintings by strong-headed students who were arrested while representing themselves in Studentenverbindung (student fraternities) costume at the beginning of the 20th century.
Philosophenweg: offers scenic spots for a family picnic in the gardens on top of a hill. Once at the top of the hill, you will be awarded with magnificent views of the oldest part of town.
The River Neckar: is particularly beautiful in the evening when you can observe the sun setting and reflecting in the water. Taking a cruise along the river is also a great way to explore the city as you will get to see a number of charming villages and unspoiled countryside.
