Spring is quite nice here, as the city's trees come into bloom and days begin to warm up after the damp and dreary winter. Winters are cold and often chilling due to the dampness, with temperatures as low 2°C in January.

The Elbe River dœes freeze in the winter, despite the salt content and tides. The Alster lakes in the centre also freeze over, allowing local residents to enjoy ice skating on the surface. Snowfall is not usually significant, although it dœes occur, beginning in early December, with icy sleet being more common during the winter months.
