Hamburg Travel Guide
Metro and train: the city’s elevated Metro, or ‘Hamburger HochBahn’ as it’s locally known, comprises three lines (U1, U2 and U3) and although it’s considered ‘elevated’, about 40 per cent of its service is underground.
This system is complemented by an S-Bahn service, which operates much like a Metro in the central areas, and provides two inner-city links connecting Hamburg’s two main railway stations, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Hamburg-Altona.
Bus: more than 1,500 modern and comfortable buses are in service round the clock, supplementing the rail network. As an added service to passengers, bus drivers will call ahead to arrange for a taxi pick-up at any bus stop along the route.
Taxi: taxis in the city are plentiful and easy to hail on the street. Taxi stands are also found throughout the city. Prices here for taxis are reportedly lower than in other German cities and taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped.
