The city is both an important business and financial centre, evidenced by the country’s most spectacular skyline, and a worthwhile tourist destination with its own special charm.
The attractions of the Altstadt, or old town, can be leisurely explored over a couple of days, on foot. This area was heavily bombed during WWII and because of this, there has been extensive restoration. Attractions here include Gœethe Haus, the birthplace of Germany’s greatest author and the Dom, which from 1356 was the electoral and coronation site of the kings of the Holy Roman Empire.
In addition to exploring the old city on foot, a popular tour is available onboard the Ebbelwei-Express tram, a one-hour trip that passes by many of Frankfurt’s historic sights, while passengers enjoy Ebbelwei, pretzels and live music. Ebbelwei is a popular and very potent local cider. Visitors can also take a boat ride up the river to the wine area of Rudesheim, with the opportunity to taste the fine wines produced in this region.
The area surrounding Frankfurt is best explored by car. Nearby, you’ll find the Taunus Mountains, a favourite residential and recreational area for the well-to-do. Also nearby are the castle ruins in Konigstein; the spa and shopping on offer in Bad Homburg and the picturesque cobbled streets of Kronberg. A bit further away, but still easily reachable, are the larger cities of Wiesbaden and Mainz, which are well worth a visit.
