Frankfurt Travel Guide
To the north-west of Frankfurt is Bockenheim, an interesting university town with lively folk dancing and many local bands providing evening entertainment. If you head east, you will come to the scenic Rhineland between Mainz and Koblenz. Set against the stunning landscape in this area are a number of quaint wine-producing villages.
Taunus: is the wooded, hilly area to the north and west of Frankfurt where you’ll find many well-known spa towns which include Bad Homburg and Wiesbaden, with its hot saline springs set in a nice park. From the picturesque town of Konigstein, the road continues on to Grosser Feldberg, which is the highest point in the Taunus.
Heidelberg: is 74 kilometres south of Frankfurt. One of the favourite towns in the country, Heidelberg certainly lives up to visitors’ expectations, with its Gothic and Renaissance castle overlooking the town and its romantic surroundings on the banks of the Neckar River.
It’s home to Germany’s oldest university and continues to maintain a lively atmosphere, largely due to its large student population. The picture-perfect setting is enhanced by numerous lively festivals held at different times of the year, and the many popular student taverns.
Wiesbaden: is a spa town 25 miles from Frankfurt, making for a popular daytrip. The town is situated between the Rhine River and the Taunus Mountains and has been a spa resort since Roman times, boasting 26 hot springs. Wiesbaden is also an important cultural centre, hosting the International May Festival each year. Frankfurt residents often travel here to visit the casino.
