Cologne Travel Guide - Attractions
Cologne Cathedral (Kolner Dom): is one of the main attractions of the city. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Dom is centrally located outside the main train station. It is Gothic style and took over 600 years to construct. Climbing 509 spiral stairs to the platform on the rooftop can be quite exhausting, but the effort will reward you with some of the most breathtaking views across the city.
Roman Tower (Romerturm): the remain of a huge Roman wall and tower built around Cologne in 50 AD. Walk around to admire the original coloured mosaics, which are still in good condition.
Rhine Cable Car (Kolner Seibahn): will take you on a fun, exciting ride over the river to the Rheinpark. Observe the city and the Altstadt from this popular aerial chairlift which was opened in 1957 for the German National Garden Show. The ride is one kilometre long and guarantees an unforgettable experience. Not for those scared of heights, though.
Eigelstein Tower, Hahnen Tower and Severins Tower: are the only three surviving towers of the original twelve built in the Middle. Located in north Altstadt, the Eigelstein boasts a remarkable statue of a farmer armed with a sword, symbolising the beginning of agriculture. The Hahnen Tower can be found at Rudolfplatz while the Severins Tower stands grand and magnificent at Chlodwigplatz in the Severins Quarter.
