Berlin Travel Guide - Things To Do
Visit the Berlin wall: even though the vast majority of the wall has succumbed to enthusiastic revellers, souvenir hunters and the wrecking ball of developers, a few smaller sections remain.
The Gedenkstatte Berliner Mauer is a graffiti-free length of the Wall that has been preserved by the government, which features a visitor centre with information about the history of the wall and a chapel is dedicated to the freedom seekers that died trying to get to the other side. If you’re interested in having a sense of what the divided city was like, your best bet is a visit to the Mauermuseum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, located at the site of the famous border crossing.
Marvel at the view: the best views in East Berlin are from the top of the TV tower on Alexanderplatz, as it’s Berlin’s tallest structure at over 1200 feet. This was a product of the Communist era, although now, as a sign of changing times, neon advertisements surround the base of the tower. Visitors can take the lift up as far as a viewing platform at 666 feet, or to the revolving cafe, for a good look at the city and its environs.
Visit Museum Island: at the eastern end of Unter den Linden, you’ll find this island that is home to the famous Pergamon Museum, Berlin, Old National Gallery and Old Museum.
In 1961 the camp was turned into a memorial to its victims and today you’ll find here a few preserved facilities, barracks and a museum. There are a number of other memorials throughout the city and go some way to show the devastation caused by the Nazi Party.
