Christopher Street Day: is a celebration of gay pride, featuring a parade in July that has its origins in New York’s Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. This is a commemoration of the social ‘coming out’ of gays and lesbians that began in New York in 1969.
Today in Berlin, there are huge street parties celebrating the greater integration of homosexuals into Berlin society as well as a public demonstration of self-confidence and pride. Although this colourful festival sees a mix of hundreds of thousands of participants, its focus is largely political and that is the demand for legalisation of homosexual partnerships.
