Introduction to Wolfenbuttel, Germany
The distinction of being the southernmost town among Germany's 172 towns in northern Germany belongs to Wolfenbuttel. This pleasant historic town began life in the 1400s, when the Dukes of Brunswick built their castle here and turned the town into a centre for the arts. The Baroque-style castle is the main landmark in Wolfenbuttel, with a few sections open to the public and an interesting museum showcasing the heritage of the town. Facing the castle is Herzog-August Bibliothek, an impressive library containing one of the world's most significant collections of ancient manuscripts. Since Wolfenbuttel escaped largely unscathed from the bombings of WWII, its downtown core contains a marvelous array of half-timbered houses and other impressive medieval structures. The town is located along the popular German Timber-frame Road, making it a frequent stopover for drivers cruising the picturesque towns of central Germany. Visitors have plenty of nice hotels in Wolfenbuttel to choose from as well as a complete selection of restaurants, bars and shops catering to the tourism scene helped by the town's position on the Timber-frame Road. other spellings: wolfenbuttelhotels, wolfanbuttel hotell, wolfenbutel otel, wolfenbuttle hote
