Introduction to Wieden, Germany
One of the best towns to visit in Germany's Upper Palatinate is Wieden in the Oberpflaz. Although it's primarily an industrial town, there is a wonderful historic core at its heart, lined with postcard-perfect gabled buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries and surrounded by interesting shops and cafes. Anchoring the main Market Square is St Joseph's Parish Church, a beautiful example of neo-Romanesque architecture with a surprising Art Nouveau interior. The other star attraction in Wieden is the International Ceramics Museum which houses constantly rotating exhibitions of exquisite ceramics from around the world, courtesy of Bavaria's legendary Neue Sammlung collection. Remnants of the Renaissance can be seen all over Wieden, from the Old Town Hall with its Glockenspiel that plays twice daily to the Old School Building that now houses the Stadtmuseum, showcasing all kinds of art and items related to the history of the town and the surrounding area. There are some lovely historic hotels in Wieden in the downtown area that make the perfect complement to a stopover in this amazing town.
