Introduction to Wernigerode, Germany
One of the nicer towns along Germany's famous Half-timbered House Road is Wernigerode. Sitting along the picturesque Holtemme River with the Harz Mountains rising gently to the south, Wernigerode offers visitors a great mix of history, nature and outdoor recreation. The Town Hall and Marketplace in the heart of the town provide a perfect look at the architecture of Gothic Germany from the late 1400s. Spreading out from the main square are charming streets lined with diverse shops, cafes and bars. Some of the more interesting hotels in Wernigerode can be found in this downtown area, although the hilly outskirts feature wonderful resort-style accommodation. Rising above town is the spectacular Wernigerode Castle, which once housed the princes of this region. It is open to visitors and offers panoramic views over town to go with the lovely architecture. The Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz Mountains and is easily reached by a cool narrow gauge train right from town. Museums, art galleries and quiet public parks round off the list of places to visit here.
