The Bavarian town of Viechtach lies surrounded by the Bavarian Forest in the state's Regen district, on the banks of the Schwartzer Regen River. Its closest town is Straubing, and its main claim to fame is its proximity to the nearby quartz-bearing mountains. Formerly the main town of a district of the same name, Viechtach and the surrounding agricultural area were merged with Regen in 1972. The population of the new district is around 80,000, set in three towns and 21 municipalities. Viechtach holds a few heritage buildings, including the Church of St Augustine and the Town Hall, set in the central market square, also the home of the ancient market which still takes place on a weekly basis. An interesting museum displays the history and several thousand examples of the local quartz stone. Viechtach hotels offer comfortable lodgings for walkers, hikers and outdoor sports fans arriving to explore the forested hills.
