Introduction to Stuttgart - Outskirts
Germany's eighth biggest city, Stuttgart, has a population of about 590,000 in its immediate city limits, but over two and a half million people live in its greater metropolitan area. The outskirts of Stuttgart contain some of the city's most worthwhile attractions and stunning natural scenery. Stuttgart hotels in the city's suburbs also tend to cost less than those closer to the city centre. One of the city's most picturesque districts is Wangen, situated east of the centre and surrounded by scenic vineyards and recreation areas offering plenty of outdoor activities. Leisurely drives along the Neckar River will bring visitors to the Swabian Franconian Forest and the community of Ludwigsburg, just 16kms north of the city. Ludwigsburg's most impressive buildings include a huge white stone palace, Monrepos Castle with its own moat and the Residenzschloss estate, which contains 450 rooms within its 18 buildings. Unspoilt forests surround an ancient Cistercian monastery in Naturpark Schonbuch, the region's biggest nature reserve.Visit our Stuttgart Travel Guide
