The small city of Starnberg lies at the heart of Bavaria's Five Lakes Country just 30kms from the world city of Munich. Set on the far northern shores of Lake Starnberg, it's a visitor destination as well as a dormitory town for the nearby metropolis. The town's main attraction is the beautiful lake itself, long and narrow with small historic towns and villages dotted around its shores and flocks of swans gliding along its calm waters. Starnberg hotels offer lakeside comfort and breathtaking views across the water to the lush green hills. The area around the lake, including Starnberg town, was settled by medieval times and became a favourite with the wealthy and the well-connected, resulting in fine, well-preserved mansions and castles as well as pretty streets with old homes and shops. Starnberger Castle has lovely gardens and St Joseph's Church is well worth a visit. The nearby little town of Berg is famous for the mysterious and still unexplained death by drowning of the Bavarian King Ludwig in 1886.
