Once an Imperial City, Schweinfurt lies in Bavaria's Lower Franconia region on the banks of the Main River, some 27kms from Wurzburg. Founded in 790 AD, The city and its walls and fortifications were well established by the 13th century, and can still be seen in spite of massive Allied bombing of the industrial areas of the city during WWII. After the city's incorporation into Bavaria in the early 19th century, it became a centre for steel, aircraft and tank manufacture, with its post-war ruins becoming quickly rejuvenated by the presence of a huge American military base. Remnants of the older parts of the city's earlier beauty include a large section of the city walls and towers, the Gothic Town Hall and smaller medieval buildings in the market square, and the 16th century Church of St Johannes. Schweinfurt hotels are geared to business travellers, as the metalworking industries are almost as significant nowadays as they were before and during WWII.
