Introduction to Schwabisch Gmund, Germany
The German city of Schwabisch Gmund is set in Baden-Wurttemburg State on the banks of the Rems River, just 50kms to the east of Stuttgart. Overlooked by the towering Swabian Jura Mountains, the conurbation is home to 62,000 people and is the second largest in the region. Settled in the 2nd century by the Romans, the town became a Free Imperial City in the 12th century until it passed to Wurttemburg in 1803. The ancient remains of the Roman fortifications are now part of a UNESCO listed heritage site. The traditional craft for which the city has been famous since the 17th century is the working of gold and silver artefacts, and it's also known for natural health products. Schwabisch Gmund hotels cater for both business and leisure travellers, with several located in the Old City, close to the imposing patrician mansions and the ancient towers of the city walls. The market square holds the Town Hall and cathedral as well as charming traditional restaurants and bars. The city's churches and monasteries give a glimpse into its long and prosperous history.other spellings: schwabisch gmundhotels, schwabisch gmand hotell, schwabich gmund otel, schwabish gmund
