Schneverdingen lies in the Lower Saxony district of Soltau-Fallingbostel, some 50kms to the south of the major German city of Hamburg. Originally a principality established in 1180, the small town is the tourism gateway to the beautiful Luneberg Heath Nature Park, attracting outdoor enthusiasts and nature-lovers year round. Its economy is mixed, incorporating the traditional skills of shoe manufacture with agriculture and livestock management. Schneverdingen was the location of the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during WWII.
