Located on the banks of the Rhine is the town of Rees, which is the oldest settlement in the Rhine area. It is a town of rich history, having been occupied by the neighbouring Dutch and incorporated into the Prussian Empire at separate times in the past. However, the city was flattened in WWII, and there are only a few buildings remaining from before the war. The main attraction in the town is the beautiful promenade next to the Rhine, filled with charming cafes, restaurants and shops.
