Introduction to Recklinghausen, Germany
Recklinghausen lies at the northernmost edge of the massive industrial complex of the Ruhr Valley, with the rural Munsterland on its northern borders providing green relief from the industry to its south. An ancient settlement first recognised as a town in 1236, it changed hands as a result of politics and wars several times between the 15th and early 17th centuries, and was a centre for the infamous German witch trials. Heavily bombed during WWII due to its oil refineries, the city swiftly recovered to become a cultural hub for the region. One of the city's most unusual sights is the Icon Museum, displaying precious antique Orthodox religious icons from Greece, Russia and the Balkans as well as early Coptic treasures from Egypt.
