Introduction to Papenburg, Germany
The city of Papenburg lies on the River Ems, in the German state of Lower Saxony, and is famous for its still-functioning shipyard, nowadays an important hub for the building of cruise liners. The most charming part of town is the historic old shipyard, lined with traditional cottages and home to authentic two-masted sailing ships and other delights in a floating maritime museum, a memorial to the town's fine heritage in shipbuilding. Several fine mansions dating from the early 18th century are found here, and peaceful walks along the many canals are a favourite pastime. Papenburg hotels offer pleasant accommodation for those visiting the town. Set close to the border with the Netherlands, the flatlands were the site of a number of concentration camps built by the Nazis before and during WWII. The Papenburg-Estenwegen camp for political prisoners was the most notorious and held famous pacifist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietsky between 1935 and his death in 1938 as well as prisoners of war during the later years of the conflict. Monuments to the victims and von Ossietsky can be seen in the town.
