Introduction to Ostbevern, Germany
The small municipality of Ostbevern lies on the River Bever, some 18kms from Munster, and is made up of the village itself, the Brock district and the surrounding farms. Now set in North Rhine-Westphalia, the settlement has belonged since its founding in the 12th century to Prussia, Berg and the French Empire before its return to Prussia after WWI and its final re-incorporation into the then West Germany after WWII. The tiny town has a picturesque moated castle, Loburg, now used as an Episcopal school, as well as a church containing a 12th century steeple and 16th century Gothic elements. Two Ostbevern hotels are found in the village, with several more scattered in the surrounding countryside. Nearby is the historic small town of Telgte, known as a pilgrimage destination for its miraculous medieval carved figure of the Virgin, with an annual religious procession beginning in Ostbevern and winding its way to Telgte. The image has been listed as genuinely miraculous by the Vatican.
