Introduction to Oldenburg, Germany
The pretty and historic Lower Saxony city of Oldenburg lies between the city of Bremen and the Netherlands border, and holds an ancient city centre with winding, cobbled streets and many heritage buildings. Popular with visitors year round, its quaint pedestrianised streets are lined with charming little homes, tiny shops and quiet squares. The city itself is large, with a population of around 160,000, and was first recorded in the early 12th century as a ford settlement on the Hunte River. Unlike many German cities, Oldenburg escaped damage to its historic structures during WWII, with only one per cent of its buildings destroyed. The old city centre is surrounded by ring roads separating it from the modern developments, and contains a selection of Oldenburg hotels set in heritage buildings. Close by are the magnificent Oldenburg Castle, now a museum, the cathedral with its soaring spires, and the marketplace with its restaurants offering rich and warming local dishes, as well as bars, street food stalls and a lively weekly market serving the many farms in the city's agricultural surroundings. other spellings: oldenburk hote, oldebnurg hotle, oldenburghotels, oldanburg hotell, oldenberg otel
