Introduction to Neuwied, Germany
The Rhineland-Palatinate town of Neuwied is capital of the district of the same name and lies along the right bank of the River Rhine. Although the area was settled during the Roman era, the town itself was founded as late as 1653, soon becoming a centre for religious tolerance. An unusual claim links the paternal ancestors of famous US president John D Rockefeller as residents in the town before their emigration to the new world in 1710. Architecturally, the town is interesting as it contains the historic 18th century summer residences of local nobility as well as several ruined castles, museums and a charming former royal hunting lodge, now a restaurant. Neuwied hotels are set mainly in the town's central area, close to 17th century heritage buildings such as the Old Brewery, the Old Town Hall, the half-timbered Council Chamber and Customs House. The historic churches here reflect the diverse religious denominations originally drawn to the town. other spellings: neuwiet hotle, neuwiedhotels, neuweid hotell, neuvied otel, nuewied hote
