The capital of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz district, Neustrelitz lies along the shores of the Zieker See in Germany's spectacular Mecklenburg Lake District. Its ancient city centre is a treasure-house of Baroque architecture crowned by the Marktplatz (market square), with its city church and town hall both dating from the 18th century. Other notable buildings include the Palace Church, the neo-Classical Hebe Temple and the Louise Temple, built as the tomb of the Prussian Queen Louise, born a Mecklenburg-Strelitz princess. Within the town is the pretty Glambeck See lake, a popular summer picnic destination.
