Murnau is a Bavarian city around 56 miles south of Munich. Travellers can get here by taking a train from Munich in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This journey should take no longer than an hour. Visitors to the city will enjoy its scenic location on the shores of Staffelsee Lake, set against the backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. A nice way to enjoy the view is by having a beer in the town's traffic-free plaza. However, the city isn't all about drinking; there are plenty of cultural activities and outdoors attractions. Murnau hotels are popular with hikers and cyclists who base themselves here when visiting the surrounding countryside. With regards to culture, the city hosts two large festivals; the World Music Festival and the Leonhardifahrt Festival (early November). The latter is comprised of a horse procession, but unsurprisingly ends up with more raucous festivities in the beer tent. History enthusiasts should visit the medieval Murnau Castle. The on-site museum tells the castle's story since its construction 800 years ago.
