Introduction to Munich - Giesing
Giesing, or Obergiesing, is a Munich suburb around five kilometres south of the historic Altstadt district. Giesing is mostly a residential and commercial zone, but is ringed by some of the Bavarian city’s finest parks. The train station in the district is an interchange for the city’s tram, S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines. The excellent public transport links here ensure that guests at Giesing hotels can reach the myriad Munich tourist draws with ease. The steeples of the Holy Cross Church are the district’s iconic landmark. In the locality of the church, there are shops and wining and dining venues. The MVG Transport Museum is south and contains vehicular exhibits which include a horse-drawn tram and a subway carriage. Hellabrunn Zoo is one kilometre west on the right bank of the River Isar. Species housed here include sea lions and banded mongooses. The Ostpark is east and among recreational facilities here are a lake offering ice-skating in winter and barbecue pits.
