The Merzig-Wadern municipality of Mettlach lies on a loop of the River Saar, close to the Rhineland-Palatinate state border, and comprises mostly forest and agricultural land. The town itself is famous as the home of the Villeroy and Boch ceramics factory, and has a number of interesting heritage buildings including an unusual octagonal church dating from the medieval era. The early 19th century products of the Villeroy and Boch factory are highly valued and represented in many collections, with examples displayed in the dedicated museum. The small town itself is a popular visitor destination, with a good choice of Mettlach hotels set close to historic sites, including the castles of Ziegelberg and Saareck, the old Abbey and several medieval churches. Tourism is now an important part of Mettlach's economy, with many visitors keen on outdoor activities, such as hiking and walking, arriving to explore the Saarland Circular Path and the Saar-Hunsruck-Steig.
