Introduction to Marsberg, Germany
A prosperous town by the 13th century, picturesque Marsberg lies on the Diemel River in the centre of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia State. Home to around 20,000 inhabitants, the town is divided into 17 small districts and holds a number of attractive heritage buildings, including the Helminghausen Catholic church and the pretty stone-built medieval Town Hall. Set in the river valley, it's surrounded by forested hills and several protected areas of natural beauty including the Teutoburg Forest Nature Park. Steeped in history from Saxon times and no stranger to armed conflicts from the 8th century onwards, with even the great Emperor Charlemagne having left his mark on this settlement, Marsberg is a comfortable base for exploring both the heritage sights in town and the quaint villages and small towns nearby. In town, Marsberg hotels offers easy access to the most significant Gothic landmark, the church of St Nikolei, dating from the 13th century and set in the OberMarsberg, the ancient heart of the town.
