The small town of Markdorf lies in the Bodensee district of the southern German state of Baden-Wurttemburg, close to Lake Constance. Set on the slopes of the hills and overlooking the lake, the small town's flowery local title is 'Pearl of the Linzgaus' and its views over the lake and its shores are spectacular. Close by are protected areas of natural beauty, with eight picturesque agricultural villages lining the nearby slopes. Markdorf is the market town for produce from all the neighbouring communities. A quiet, pretty town with several comfortable Markdorf hotels, its present day community has swollen to include summer visitors to the lake and its verdant surroundings. The town lies on several well-know tourism trails, including the Upper Swabian Baroque Route and the Lake Constance Jubilee Trail, and has for hundreds of years been a stop on the famous pilgrimage route to the Spanish shrine of Santiago de Compostela.
