Introduction to Leipzig - City Centre
The city of Leipzig is the largest city in Saxony state, Germany. Its name was derived from the Slavic term lipsk, with Leipzig meaning settlement where the lime trees stand. The University of Leipzig was founded in 1409 and initiated the city’s development into a centre for the publishing industry and law in Germany. There are a number of sites in and around the city centre for visitors to see. St Thomas Church, where composer Bach once worked, is a highlight along with the monument to Felix Mendelssohn and the Battle of the Nations monument. The Botanical Garden is a nice place to unwind after visiting the new and old city halls. The zoo ranks as one of the best in Germany while St Nicholas Church is the city’s biggest. A number of Leipzig hotels encompass the old-world architecture of the city and are sights in themselves. Fine dining restaurants, shop houses and boutiques all cater to the growing number of tourists to the central area. A number of annual events draw tourists each year including: the Auto Mobil International motor show; Dokfestival, an international documentary and animated film festival; Jazztage, a contemporary jazz festival; the feminist Punk and Electro Festival; and Bachfest, in honour of Johann Bach.
