Introduction to Kiel - City Centre
Kiel, Germany is a Baltic sea port which also happens to be the capital of the nation’s northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. Unfortunately, many buildings were destroyed during WWII, but one city centre landmark which remains standing is its famous harbour, from which several ferries and cruise ships travel between the city and many other European ports. However, Kiel city centre harbour receives its largest amount of shipping traffic during the annual Kieler Woche festival, which lasts a week and attracts more than two million tourists to the city each year. This is also the only time of year when rooms in Kiel hotels can be difficult to obtain. Also located in the heart of city are the main shopping districts and the historic old town, which includes the rebuilt Kieler Castle and its accompanying large library, as well as most of the other buildings which survived Kiel’s WWII bombings.
