Introduction to Kiel - Altenholz
Germany's Baltic coastline offers travellers some of the most striking natural scenery in the north, and the small community of Altenholz provides the ideal spot for lingering long enough to enjoy it. This is a major naval area for Germany, with massive ports crowded with imposing ships dotting the coast around Altenholz. Yet this port town has been around for centuries, and its annual Kiel Week brings out the world's largest collection of historic sailing ships to relive those golden days. There is quite a bit of culture to enjoy in and around the town, from the Opera House in nearby Kiel to the incredible shopping along Holsten Street. Two botanical gardens provide a quick escape from the relative bustle of the city, and of course the Baltic Sea is right on hand with excellent summertime beaches at Laboe, Moltenort and Kiel-Strande.
