Introduction to Kastellaun, Germany
Kastellaun, located in central-west Germany, is a historical town of around 5,000 people. Tourism is a major part of the economy of the town, where guided tours of the historical areas are conducted by expert guides. Overlooking the town is the Kastellaun monumental zone which hosts Castle Sponheim's ruins, destroyed in 1689. These days, regular festivals and theatre performances are held in the castle's grounds. The Jewish cemetery is another historical feature of this monumental zone. In the main town, there are two churches worth visiting; the Evangelical church on Kirchplatz and the Catholic Church of the Holy Cross. Those interested in Gothic Revival architecture should visit the Catholic Church, whose basilica was built in the late 19th century. The Evangelical church is much older, dating back to the 14th century. Outdoor enthusiasts should head to the southern outskirts where a well-known cycle path (Schinderhannes-Radweg) runs along the old railway line. Visitors can reach Kastellaun hotels by flying to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, 18 miles away.
