Kalkar, located in the far west of Germany, is a municipality of around 14,000 people. In fact, the town is only about 10 miles from the Netherlands border. Its best-known historical attraction is St Nicolai Church, which is home to one of the most important sacral inventories from the European Middle Ages. Built in 1450, it is considered to be one of the finest Gothic churches in the region. It is centrally located within walking distance of the marketplace and Kalkar hotels. A short walk east of the church, visitors will reach the City Museum (Stadtisches Museum), where they can learn even more about the town's local history. Central Kalkar is just a couple of miles from the River Rhine, where its most prominent family attraction is located. On what was once the site of a planned nuclear reactor, an amusement park named Kern-Wasser Wunderland is now home to roller coasters, rides and a variety of restaurants. The nearest airport to the town is Weeze Airport, just over 10 miles away, which receives both international and domestic flights.
