Introduction to Kaiserslautern, Germany

Set in the southwest of Germany at the edge of the Palatinate Forest, the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Kaiserlautern isn't a major tourist attraction, although its 9th century old quarter has a few attractive heritage buildings. The city is the headquarters of over 50,000 NATO military personnel, who make up more than half the city's population, contributing hugely to its economy. Famous during the 12th century as the hunting retreat of Emperor Barbarossa, the site has been settled since Celtic times. Castle ruins and several medieval churches make interesting places to visit, and the presence of the mostly American NATO forces make for good nightlife, a plethora of Kaiserlautern hotels and a selection of international bars and restaurants as well as traditional German beer halls. The city was, and still is, known for its wines as well as its strong beers. The nearby forest holds many hiking and walking trails as well as pretty picnic spots along its many small lakes.
