Hof is a Bavarian city in the east of Germany, close to the Czech border. The city is popular with film lovers, who flock here to attend the city's annual film festival. This international festival enables promising directors to display their latest works. It should be noted that Hof hotels can be particularly busy at this time. The other big festival is the Hofer Fair (July/August), which puts on a big parade, amusements and fantastic food. The local speciality is schnitz, a sausage hotpot which is sold on the streets of Hof. The city's most significant piece of art is the Hofer altar, dating back to the 1460s. Unfortunately, it is now housed in Munich so visitors will have to be content with seeing the Heidenreich organ instead. This organ, located in St Michaelis parish church, is considered one of the finest in Bavaria. The city has its own airport with regular connections with Frankfurt. However, many guests get here by train. The city is on three main lines, from Leipzig, Bamberg and Regensberg.
