Introduction to Hildesheim, Germany
Hildesheim, located in the German state of Lower Saxony, is a city of 103,000 people. It is just 20 miles from Hannover, meaning that Hildesheim hotels are easily accessible by train (Inter-City Express) and road (A7 Autobahn). The city has a rich history; it is considered to be one of the oldest cities in this part of the country. Unfortunately, many of the historic buildings were destroyed by bombing in 1945, and were subsequently rebuilt in the 1980s. Before the 1945 destruction, the historic market place used to be one of the most beautiful of its kind in the world. However, since the rebuilding, the square has now regained much of its former glory. The best place to learn about the city's history is at Butcher's Guild Hall. Based on the original, this half-timbered building hosts the city's museum and a restaurant. Away from the market place, some other historic buildings remained undamaged, including the UNESCO-recognised St Michael's Church. Built in the early 11th century, this is one of the earliest examples of Romanesque architecture. St Mary's Catholic Cathedral was not as lucky in 1945, but the rebuilt version has since been listed by UNESCO, too.
