Introduction to Helmstadt, Germany
Helmstadt in the east of Germany's Lower Saxony is the capital of the district of the same name. The town, which became a city in the 13th century, developed around a 1st century Benedictine abbey. It was an important centre of learning from the 1576 to 1810 when the University of Helmstedt was active. Today, Juleum Novum, one of the university's former buildings, is a tourist draw. In modern history, the city was a border crossing point between the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic. A memorial now marks the spot of this disused border point, which was colloquially known as Checkpoint Alpha. Today, the military traffic of the second half of the 20th century has been replaced by moderate tourist traffic. Guests staying in Helmstadt hotels can enjoy the old quarter's collection of architectural gems, from the Mayor's Office to the Owl Tower, part of the old town wall. other spellings: helmstaet otel, helmstatd hote, halmstadt hotle, helmstadthotels, hemlstadt hotell
