Introduction to Heidelberg, Germany
From its stand-alone castle to the green blanket of Odenwald Forest which surrounds it, the city of Heidelberg is a must-visit destination on a German holiday. Renowned as a city for intellectuals on account of its large university, it is one of the most historically picturesque settlements in Germany and Europe. The city rests upon the banks of the Neckar River, sprawling into the plains of the Rhine Valley. Heidelberg hotels are just a short distance from many of the city's major attractions. When it comes to sightseeing, the first and foremost important feature in the city is the schloss, or castle. This magnificent, partly ruined Renaissance structure offers great views of the rest of the city from its hilltop location. There is an intriguing Altstadt, or Old Town, boasting charming lanes, buildings and an exciting, medieval culture. One of the main churches in the city is the Jesuitenkirche, while the Heiliggeistkirche also sees plenty of fascinated travellers each year, too.Visit our Heidelberg Travel Guide
