Introduction to Heidelberg - Outskirts
Home to a world-famous castle and Germany’s oldest university, Heidelberg is a popular stop on any eastern Germany tour itinerary. Although much of the tourist activity centres on the Old Town, there are a number of interesting places in other parts of this small city. In the northeast, the Heiligenberg Mountain provides some of the most spectacular views of the city. The mountain also hosts the Thingstatte, a theatre which is an important historical relic of the Nazi regime. On the south side of the river, visitors can get a different perspective on the Old Town by climbing Konigstuhl. Visitors have the chance to take an old funicular train to the peak, while the more energetic can climb the 1,200 steps of Heaven’s Ladder (Himmelsleiter) instead. Farther afield, visitors can take a suburban train to Dilsberg, a journey which should take around 20 minutes. Visitors can complete the medieval forest trail and see its four castles. Travellers can reach Heidelberg hotels on the city’s outskirts by flying into Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, around two hours’ drive from the city.Visit our Heidelberg Travel Guide
