Introduction to Heidelberg - Hauptbahnhof
The Hauptbahnhof, two kilometres to the west of Heidelberg’s Altstadt district, is the main railway station for the city. The station handles around 30,000 passengers daily and has train services from regional locations including Mannheim and Frankfurt. Intercity travellers will usually travel to Mannheim and switch to local trains there. The front entrance of the station is on Willy Brandt Platz and from here, Kurfursten Anlage is the route to the Altstadt. There are several Hauptbahnhof hotels adjacent to the station forecourt and more in the surrounding streets. Cafes and restaurants close to the station mostly serve specialities from the Heidelberg area, pretzels and wurst sausages. The city’s legendary nightlife venues reach out as far as this district and sell apple wine and wheat beer. St Boniface’s Church dates from the 1890s and is a neo-Romanesque edifice with lofty twin towers. The south bank of the River Neckar is a 300m walk north from the Hauptbahnhof. The riverside is a great site to enjoy views of the verdant hills that ring the town as well as the landmark Heidelberg Castle. Visit our Heidelberg Travel Guide
