Introduction to Hattingen, Germany
Having shifted its attention from coal mining and steel production to tourism, Hattingen in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia has much to lure visitors despite its history of more than 200 years as an industrial hub of the Ruhr. Its well-preserved medieval core, on the south bank of the River Ruhr, is the main draw, with its 14th to 16th century timber-framed houses and narrow lanes. Among the most notable historic buildings in the old quarter are the 17th century Iron House and the 16th century Old Town Hall. Remnants of the old city walls remain, outside of which lie three castles dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries. The 12th century Castle Isenburg offers the best views from its hilltop location, Haus Kemnade features a moat, and Blankenstein Castle is positioned close to the river. In the evening, guests at Hattingen hotels can sit back and relax in one of the old quarter's many small beer gardens. The nearest airports are less than an hour's drive away at Dortmund and Dusseldorf. other spellings: hettingen hotell, hattignen otel, hattingan hote, hatingen hotle, hattingenhotels
