The St Michaelis Church is a Lutheran church that has long been one of the city's major landmarks. It was destroyed by lightning in 1661 and replaced by a Baroque structure in 1786. The church was again destroyed by fire in 1906, but this time was rebuilt according to the original architectural style. It again sustained irreparable damage in both WWI and WWII. The tower standing today offers stunning views of the city.
