Introduction to Hamburg - City Centre
Home to one of Europe’s most important ports, the Germany city of Hamburg is a city with a rich history. This is where many fine old buildings line a prolific network of waterways. Though shipping is a key part of the city’s life, much of the country’s media is based here, as is a major Airbus manufacturing facility, sealing Hamburg’s economic importance. Architecture is less flamboyant here than in many German cities, with many buildings reflecting the commercial history, particularly in the Old Town, where many hotels in Hamburg city centre are located. Many of the old warehouses are apartments today, and the canals support active local communities, with pubs, restaurants, bars and more. The Grosse Freiheit, in the city’s west, is marked by red-light districts but the spectacle is popular with many tourists. Head a few minutes in the other direction to find the popular shopping area of Monckebergstrasse, which is home to plenty of historic buildings including many of the city’s old churches. The 19th century City Hall, or Rathaus, is located at the end of Monckebergstrasse.Visit our Hamburg Travel Guide
