Introduction to Hamburg - Altona
Originally a fishing village and under Danish administration for 200 years from 1640, the river-port town of Altona is the westernmost borough in the massive German city state of Hamburg. Bordered by the River Elbe, the town is a popular place to live for workers in the nearby big city and its industrial sectors, with rapid transport by rail easing the commuting load. The borough is also a favourite shopping location for Hamburg residents, with everything from flea markets to modern malls here. Altona hotels are mostly aimed as business travellers as the borough is close to several conference centres, seven kilometres from the city’s international airport and Hamburg’s commercial district, and two kilometres from the A7 autobahn. The city of Hamburg is traditionally all about international trade, with business its focus, and one of Europe’s premier inland harbours as well as being a major hub for the aerospace industry.
