Introduction to Goettingen, Germany
Goettingen is a university town located at the very centre of Germany. Despite its convenient location, the town is often overlooked by English-speaking tourists, who tend to focus on more well-known destinations. However, a short break in Goettingen remains an enjoyable experience. Most travellers get here by train. There are regular ICE (Inter-City Express) trains from Hamburg, Munich and Berlin. The best way to see the city is on foot; self-guided walking tours are available from the tourist information office, located in the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus). Situated in the marketplace, the Old Town Hall marks the centre of the town and is an excellent place to begin a walking tour. It hosts the Goose Girl fountain (Ganseliesel), which is the city's most-recognised figure. When standing in front of the Town Hall, visitors can see four of the city's churches, the oldest of which, St John's, dates back to the 1200s. However, St James' Church is the most impressive; its beautiful interior still features some of the original paintwork. Plant lovers shouldn't miss the 18th century botanical gardens located behind the auditorium. It's generally easy to find Goettingen hotels, but visitors might want to book ahead in December, when the busy Christmas markets take place.
