A popular side trip from Germany's Frankfurt to the northeast, the cathedral town of Geisenheim is known locally as 'Wine Town' for its surrounding, Rhine-hugging vineyards. But there's more to this Hessen town than just fantastic wine, with its magnificent Rheingau Cathedral a rival to the cathedral in Cologne. The Philipp Hoffmann-designed church dates from the 16th century, with the addition of the twin-towers completed in the 19th century. Its Strumm organ, tombs and rich decor make it a must-visit. The town's symbol, a huge lime tree that is allegedly 700 years old, stands in front of the Town Hall. A number of palaces make up the rest of the attractions, from the 16th century Schloss Schonborn to the 18th century Palais Ostein. Geisenheim hotels are at their busiest during the annual classical music Rheingau Musik Festival, held in the summer months, and the Geisenheimer Lindenfest wine festival in July.
