Introduction to Fussen - Hohenschwangau
Few of Germany's many castles are as impressive or as well known as Hohenschwangau and nearby Neuschwanstein. Both of these castles are situated in the heart of Bavaria's breathtaking Allgau region, two kilometres from the village of Schwangau and three kilometres from the larger city of Fussen. Most Hohenschwangau hotels are located halfway between the two castles in a village also named Hohenschwangau. Although the castle was first mentioned during the 12th century, it eventually fell into ruins until a Bavarian crown prince had the castle rebuilt to its previous splendour between 1832 and 1836. Neuschwanstein Castle was also built from the ruins of two previous castles between 1869 and 1886. All Neuschwanstein visitors must climb 165 steps to the upstairs area, then 181 steps downstairs. Guided tours of both castles are available in both English and German, but additional audio guides are available in a variety of other languages. Approximately two million people visit these castles and their surrounding area between towering mountains and green meadows each year. Hohenschwangau's other main attraction is a boat house where visitors can rent row or pedal boats for trips on Alpesse Lake.other spellings: hohen schwangau otel, hohenhwangau hotell, hohenchwangau hote, hohenwangau hotles
