Introduction to Fussen - City Centre
The main tourist attractions in Fussen, Germany are the nearby castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, but Bavaria’s highest community also has even more to offer within its city centre. Goats and sheep stroll past the neighbourhood where many hotels in Fussen city centre can be found along the Via Claudia route, which has connected Venice, Italy to the Alps since the days of the Roman Empire. Nowadays, this ancient route is known as the Reichenstrasse, and is where Fussen city centre’s main shopping spot resides. Here modern shops stand alongside houses with towering gables dating back to the Middle Ages on a street which is still cobblestoned. Other main attractions in the middle of Fussen include the 8th century church and the abbey of St Mangkirche, which offers free guided tours at certain times, and the nearby local heritage museum. The city is known as ’Bavaria’s Romantic Soul’ because of its location at the end of Germany’s Romantic Road, near the Austrian border.
