Bordering Thuringia Forest to the south, Friedrichroda in central Germany's Gotha district is a quiet base from which to discover this charming area of rugged mountains, stately homes and fir-clad hills. Hikers, climbers and skiers make up the majority of guests at Friedrichroda hotels, who come for the recreational opportunities in the nearby forest. The Rennsteig, an ancient trail that follows the main ridge through the forest's mountains and traditionally marks the border between central and south Germany, is the main attraction for hikers. Also within the forest is the World Heritage-listed Wartburg Castle, close to Eisenach and around 30kms from Friedrichroda, and the one-time host of Martin Luther. In Friedrichroda itself is Reinhardsbrunn Castle, an 11th century Benedictine monastery which was converted into a royal castle in the early 19th century. To the northeast by around 20kms is Gotha town, dominated by the imposing 17th century Friedenstein Castle. Further Baroque as well as Renaissance architecture can be seen in this town at the Town Hall and the Ekhof Theatre.
