Introduction to Frankfurt - Sachsenhausen
Just on the other side of the mighty Main River from Frankfurt’s Old Town is the district of Sachsenhausen. Beginning life as the bridgehead across the river into the city, this interesting section of Frankfurt is now home to some of Germany’s most famous museums as well as the city’s largest flea market. Sachsenhausen has one of the city’s best nightlife and shopping scenes, especially along the main Schweizer Street. Taverns, traditional cider houses, trendy bars and cool cafes all rub shoulders, catering to the needs of local Frankfurters. This part of Frankfurt is the hub of apple cider production, as it has been for centuries, so visitors can expect to find an extraordinary number of quaint old cider bars along nearly every lane. Of course, there are plenty of Sachsenhausen hotels to choose from within easy walking distance of the district’s hot spots. A distinct Old Town area can be found in the southern part of Sachsenhausen, where narrow cobblestone streets hide a wealth of tiny squares with fountains and classic timbered houses.
